Donna L. Spilis has been a director at the American Bar Association since 1975. She has served as the Staff Director for the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs since November 1989. Prior, Donna spent 14 years of that time supporting the ABA Law Practice Management Section. She received her BS degree in organizational management, is certified as a trained intervenor through the Lawyer’s Assistance Program, Inc. of Illinois, and has completed Gambling Counselor Training through Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital. Donna spent two years (1999-2001) at Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center in Dyer, Indiana, teaching chemical dependency education and conduction psychosocial assessments of patients with addictions and mental health problems. Donna was elected to the College of Law Practice Management as an Honorary Fellow in 1994 as part of its first class of inductees. Donna completed her Masters degree with Honors in Human Services – Addictions Counseling in 1998 at National Louis University, Chicago. She is also a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Donna has two grown daughters, Tammy and Kate, and three grandchildren, Kenny, Amanda and Rachel.
