Gerry has served the Conference Board of Canada, is a Fellow of The College of Law in London and a Visiting Professor at the University or Pretoria in South AfricaGerry co-authored, at Butterworths’ request, a text on the marketing of legal services called Practice Development: Creating the Marketing Mindset, and, for The Institute for Best Practices, two works for those in firms with management responsibilities: Herding Cats and beyond KNOWING, both of which have become management best-sellers (Herding Cats has remained on the “Canadian Management Bestsellers” list for several years).

CITATION UPON INDUCTION INTO THE COLLEGE
When Gerry Riskin started practicing law 36 years ago, he little could have guessed the trajectory his career would take. As a budding lawyer in Edmonton, Alberta, his most immediate concerns were his practice and remembering to plug in his car battery against a fierce winter. Today, he advises lawyers the world over on how to build their practices from his home on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. He has been managing partner of an international law firm, and has grown an extraordinary professional consulting firm, Edge International. With his restless energy and ability to inspire, Gerry embraces new ideas and technologies. He practices in a truly global, web-enabled organization in which his colleagues may be in half a dozen different time zones. He was a pioneer in the development of video, compact disc and DVD training technologies to help lawyers run their own training sessions. His clientele is scattered around the world, but Gerry devotes the same care and attention to them as he did all those years ago as a young associate in snowy Edmonton. I’m pleased to welcome Gerry Riskin as a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management. —Nominated by Tom Grella and Merrilyn Astin Tarlton, October 2011
