Norm Letalik has dedicated his professional life to the understanding and enhancement of law practice management. His contributions stretch across (1) legal scholarship and academia, (2) the practice of law, and (3) law firm leadership and management.  In terms of scholarship and teaching, Norm has taught courses at two law schools (Dalhousie University and National University of Singapore) on administrative, admiralty, contract, and international law. He has two graduate degrees, and his legal scholarship continues at The University of Toronto Law School where he is currently a Doctoral of Juridicial Science (J.D.S.) candidate. His dissertation topic is The Globalization of the Practice of Law.  As a practicing lawyer (Barrister and Solicitor, Law Society of Upper Canada/Ontario; and Solicitor, Law Society of England and Wales), Norm is a founding partner of Borden Ladner Gervais where he provides litigation, ADR, marine, admiralty, product liability, aviation, and international legal services to the firm’s clients. His legal skills have been recognized by Lexpert and Best Lawyers in Canada.  Norm has been an outstanding law practice management leader at BLG, where he has served as the national head of not one, but four of the firm’s practice groups and one industry group, as well as managing partner of the firm’s London office. He currently directs BLG’s Professional Excellence (lawyer training) and Knowledge Management programs. Within BLG, you will find no partner more respected by his peers on law practice management issues than Norm.

What makes Norm’s future contributions to our College so valuable is his deep understanding of the interconnected economic, political, and cultural spaces in which legal services are delivered. Having studied and worked as a lawyer on three continents (Europe, Asia, and North America) and having served as an academic, practicing lawyer, and law firm leader, he has a broad perspective enjoyed by few practicing lawyers and one our College prizes highly. I know that COLPM Fellows will greatly benefit from Norm’s contributions in our future College programs, discussions, and community fellowship and will welcome him with great enthusiasm to our company.
