Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP
Organization Type: Law Firm
Position/Title: Chief Operating Officer
511 Union St., Suite 270
Nashville, TN 7219
Teresa Walker joined Waller Lansden in 1977 fresh out of college with no clue where this opportunity would lead her. As most legal administrators have, she has learned on the job. She has helped grow Waller from 16 attorneys to almost 200 with 4 offices in 3 states. She has helped open and close locations; upgraded accounting systems more times than she can remember; handled every sort of HR issue one can imagine; negotiated leases for and built out almost 200,000 square feet of office space in various locations over a 20-year period; been involved in every aspect of the firm’s technology for years; had a seat at the Board table and been involved in virtually every aspect of our Board’s operation for almost 30 years; worked with the firm’s compensation systems at all levels; partnered with eight different managing partners over the years to keep Waller vibrant and relevant; and has helped develop and implement numerous strategic plans. Walker understands the value of servant leadership and has always strived to do her best to help Waller stay on the leading edge of the legal industry.
Walker is currently the President-Elect of the Association of Legal Administrators serving on the Executive Committee of its Board of Directors and will assume the President role in May, 2015. She also currently serves on the Large Firm Administrators Steering Committee of the Association and is a Trustee of The Foundation of the Association of Legal Administrators. Additionally, Walker is a Lifetime and Founding Member of the Middle Tennessee Association of Legal Administrators. She has an Associate’s Degree in Legal Secretarial Administration from Nashville Community College. She also is a performer (Southern Gospel music piano player, singer and songwriter) and heads up her own quartet that performs regularly, which she has been doing since high school. Walker is married, has two sons and two grandsons, whom she loves to spend as much time with as possible.
CITATION UPON INDUCTION INTO THE COLLEGE
Teresa Walker is unique in many ways – not the least of which is that she has for over 30 years served her law firm in Nashville as its Executive Director, and has shepherded its growth from a small to a large, progressive, and regionally dominant firm. Her professional achievements are legion, and are exceeded only by her commitment to service through her peerless mentoring of others in the legal management profession and her volunteer service with the Association of Legal Administrators – including as a leader of its Large Firm Administrators Caucus, through active participation in a myriad of professional education programs, and now as ALA’s international President-Elect. A “can-do” person, one of Teresa’s strongest contributions has been the calm, efficient, and effective example she has set and which, profession-wide, has set her apart with a small group of others as the example of what one can become as a firm COO.
