Bill founded Cobb Consulting in 1978 after spending four years with Bracewell and Patterson (now Bracewell and Giuliani) as their COO. Prior to that he was a consultant and CPA with Touche Ross (now Deloitte Touche) for three years. He became active in the Law Practice Management Section in 1975 by giving a presentation to the ABA Annual Meeting on “Strategic Planning in Law Firms” and writing one of the first books published by the Section titled A Planning Workbook for Law Firm Management. Bill was asked and accepted the responsibility of chairing the first strategic planning committee for the Section. All of the original members eventually became Chairs of the Section. From that committee came the recommendation for a “Glass Ceiling Task Force,” the “Alternative Billing Task Force,” and the “Seize the Future Task Force” which was to look at the legal profession 15 to 20 years into the future. Bill was one of the 5 authors of the first two books on Alternative Fee Arrangements and his “Cobb Value Curve” has been included in the next four books on the subject. He then chaired the Seize the Future Task Force which produced and conducted the 1997 and 1999 conferences on the future of the legal profession. Bill continues to work with law firms and corporate counsel on strategic and management issues in the U.S., Canada, South America, and the U.K.
